Scientists of the University of Twente in The Netherlands won a prestigious place in the ‘Hall of Fame’ of videos about fluid-in-motion.

They have made a video of leaping shampoo, in which they explain the so-called Kaye effect.

A. Kaye in Nature magazine in 1963 wrote “I can offer no explanation for this behaviour.”

At high-speed recording of 1000 frames per second the following observations were made in 300ms interval:
1) a heap is formed, 2) a streamer ejects, 3) the outgoing jet rises, 4) hits the incoming jet, 5) ends the Kaye effect.

What causes the Kaye effect?
Streamer ejects through shear-thinning property of fluid. A dimple is formed in the viscous heap. Outgoing jet is thicker quantitatively following continuity. The dimple deepens through a vertical force acting on the viscous heap and the jet rises.

The scientists set up a simple energy balance model. It includes viscous dissipation and the sear-thinning behavior of the shampoo in the dimple structure. Elastic properties of the fluid play no role.

The model predicts the leap height of the shampoo as a function of the release height. It even predicts a critical release height as observed in experiment. (For details see: JSTAT / 2006 / P07007)

To prevent the outgoing jet from interfering with the incoming jet the surface was tilted, leading to a stable Kaye effect cascade.

Leaping shampoo may even act as a light guide for laser beams in multitude of colors.

The people who worked on this are: Michel Versluis, Cor Blom, Devaraj van Meer, Ko van der Weele, Detlef Lohse.

“Ozzy Osbourne has sold over 100 million records, been the star of his own reality show and bit the head off of a live bat on stage. The rock icon who has just about done it all will add one more notch to his belt this fall when he makes his first videogame appearance in Activision’s in Guitar Hero World Tour. That is just the tip of the iceberg as the new info on Guitar Hero World Tour came in a virtual flood today.

You can’t have Ozzy Osbourne as a playable character without at least one of his songs being featured in the game. For Ozzy, Activision has nailed down two, “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley,” both originally released on his debut solo album Blizzard of Ozz. The love for Ozzy doesn’t end there. OZZFest has been confirmed as an in-game venue, exclusive to World Tour.

Several other OZZFest bands will also be featured in World Tour. Ozzy Osbourne’s lead guitarist and founder of Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde, will be a playable character in the game, bringing with him the song “Stillborn.” In addition to delivering the upcoming album Death Magnetic as downloadable content in both Guitar Hero III and World Tour, Metallica will be featured on the disc with the track “Trapped Under Ice.” Rounding out the OZZFest announcements is System of a Down, which will offer up “BYOB.”

Though not featured as OZZFest bands, IGN has been told an additional seven tracks that will be included on the Guitar Hero World Tour set list. Those are:

Airbourne — “Too Much Too young…”
At the Drive-in — “One Armed Scissor”
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club — “Weapon of Choice”
Bob Seger — “Hollywood Nights”
Dinosaur Jr. — “Feel the pain”
Silversun Pickups — “Lazy Eye”
Survivor — “Eye of the Tiger”

If you’re keeping track, this brings the total number of confirmed songs to 23 to date. The previously announced songs are:

Billy Idol — “Rebel Yell”
Blink 182 — “Dammit”
Foo Fighters — “Everlong”
Jimi Hendrix — “Purple Haze Live”
Jimi Hendrix — “Wind Cries Mary”
Linkin Park — “What I’ve Done”
Paramore — “Misery Business”
Sublime — “Santeria”
The Doors — “Love Me Two times”
The Eagles — “Hotel California”
Van Halen — “Hot for Teacher”

On July 19, 2008 I severed a chunk of flesh off my left finger. On July 22, 2008 I went to George Washington University Medical Faculty ociates (MFA) for my first follow-up care after the injury.

Dr. Neviaser informed me that standard care is NOT to numb my damaged finger when removing the base gauze. The only choice I was given was to have MFA personnel rip off the gauze. I knew I could not handle the pain of having the blood and flesh encrusted bandage ripped off my wound. Not wanting to have MFA personnel or Dr. Neviaser to rip off the blood and flesh encrusted gauze. I was left to my own accord to remove the encrusted gauze. MFA personnel provided me with hydrogen peroxide, splint shears, and tweezers. The film is of me removing the gauze in the MFA facility.
Dr. Neviaser, in my opinion, does not have a good bed side manner and MFA supported his course of treatment.

Needless to say, I will never go to another MFA facility or doctor.
