Consider these scanerio:
1. Pacquiao fought a past-prime DLH who last fought at 154. But in doing so, Pacquiao had to climb 12 lbs from 135 to 147 (lightweight to welterweight) whereas DLH had to move down 7 lbs from 154 to 147 (jr middleweight to welterweight). Can you say Pacquiao’s camp "cherry picked" DLH in this case even though Oscar made the challenge?
2. Pacquiao beat Miguel Cotto, who was a top 2 Welterweight (top 3 if you factor in Floyd) at a catchweight of 145. Cotto has recently took a beating from Margarito which people claim Cotto was never the same after that, which of course cannot be proven logically. The catchweight wasn’t new as Cotto weighed at 145 against Judah in their Welterweight bout. Did a former flyweight in Pacquiao "cherry picked" an elite Welterweight in Cotto?
3. Hatton was the top champion (#1 ranked) at Jr Welterweight when Pacquiao beat him in his own weight class. Did Pacquiao cherry pick Hatton? If so, the Jr Welterweight division must have sucked big time.
Now let’s see Floyd:
1. He fought Zab Judah when Judah just disappointingly lost big time to a heavy underdog in Carlos Baldomir. Everybody thought the fight was off when Judah lost to Baldomir, but Floyd still took the fight. Did Floyd cherry pick a former undisputed Welterweight champion in Judah?
2. Floyd toyed around with Baldomir for 12 rounds. Baldomir was probably one of the worst Welterweight champions losing 9 fights to complete bums, but he was the undisputed champion at that time by beating Judah so he had a big name. Did Mayweather cherry pick Baldomir despite his proposed match against a much better (but title-less) Antonio Margarito?
3. Gatti was a fan favorite for his shear heart. But he really has no real skillset at par with elites other than his top notch heart and considerable above average chin. When Floyd KOd Gatti, everybody saw it because they wanted to see Gatti fight and they saw Floyd’s glory in beating a "people’s champion." Did Floyd cherry pick Gatti?
4. Marquez was the #2 P4P when Mayweather beat him. Marquez was known for giving Manny hell in his featherweight days. But Marquez last fought in lightweight (135), and Mayweather beat him at 147 (catchweight at 144 but Mayweather "wasn’t able" to meet the agreed weight). Did Mayweather cherry pick an old, bloated, small, but highly popular and respected lightweight champion in Marquez?
Pacquiao fought tougher competition than Floyd, but some people here still claim that Pacquiao reached his status through "good match making." If that is the case, why is Pacquiao mostly an underdog in his big fights.
Pacquiao was:
underdog against Sasakul
underdog against Ledwaba
underdog against Barrera
underdog against Morales (2nd fight, arguably in the 1st)
underdog against De La Hoya
and he would have been an underdog against Hatton and Cotto if he didn’t beat De La Hoya
Whereas Floyd was:
underdog against Corrales… and that’s it.
1. Manny Pacqauio fought Oscar Dela Hoya at Welterweight when Oscar hadn’t fought at that weight in nearly seven years, once both men meet in the ring it’s obvious that Manny beat "shot" fighter. Freddy Roach only took the fight with Oscar becasue he knew from previously training Dela Hoya that he wasn’t the same fighter. When Floyd fought Oscar Dela Hoya he was WBC Champion coming off a knockout victory not to mention Floyd had to move up two 154 and fight Oscar.
2. Manny Pacqauio moved up to Lightweight and gained a belt by beating David Diaz, nuff said. When Joel Casaymor held the RIng Belt and Nate Campbell held the WBO,WBA, IBF, he choose Daivd Diaz who held the WBC. Floyd fought Jose Louis Castillo in his Lightweight debut in a very close fight that he was more than willing to engae in a rematch for.
3. Manny Pacqauio fought Erik Morales who lost to Marco Antiono Barrera before fighting Manny Pacqauio, Manny looses to him however Morales takes the remach and him and Manny fight on the same night to hype their fight. Morales gets completely Out-Boxed by Zahir Raheem and Manny takes the remach anyway. He beats Morales in the rematch the same Morales that went on to lose every fight after four losses two by KO. Morales lost every fight he ever had after beating Manny Pacqauio not to mention Morales had a lot trouble making the weight for their fight.
4. Shane Mosley called out Manny Pacqauio in the Summer of 2009 and Manny willingly excepted his challenge however after sitting ringside and seeing Miguel Cotto struggle with Jousha Clottey he chose to drop the Mosley offer and fight Cotto at a Catchweight.
Every fighter has flaws that can be picked at and Manny Pacqauio’s career isn’t flawless either.
1. Why choose David Diaz over Nate Campbell and Joel Casaymor at 135 ?
2. Why take the Rematch with Morales after Zahir Raheem clearly Out-Boxed him ?
3. Why agree to fight Shane Mosley and then pass on that in order to fight Miguel Cotto after he struggled with Jousha Clottey ?
