An ivy league or crew cut can be designed to complement most possible combinations of male head shape, face shape, facial features and hair type by a skilled barber:

[His hair at the front is about 1.5" graduated in length shorter across the top to about 5/8" at the back of the crown. The back and sides are tapered shorter. Due to the graduation in length of the top hair, an ivy league or crew cut re easier to groom than a brush cut or long butch haircut where the hair on top is cut to all one length and layers on to itself. The hair at the front of an ivy or crew is very lightly waxed and brushed back off the forehead to form the short pompadour front. A little wave actually adds to the look. Read this answer and open the links therein and you will have a fairly decent understanding of the basic short styles:

Feel free to e mail if you have any more questions. Ask around for a barber that is good with the short cuts and be sure to take a photo to describe the type of ivy league or crew cut you want and don't rely on the haircut terms alone because they mean different things to different barbers.
Good Luck!
References :
go to a barber or a hairstylist and ask them to help you decide what would work best, most places give free consultations and would be more than happy to help you find a haircut that works for you
