In a salon typically filled with things like tubes of hair color, razors, thinning shears, speciality scissors, brushes, hair dryers and the like, it might seem out of place to spot an ink gun. No, it’s not a new salon/tattoo parlor hybrid, it’s part of the permanent makeup trend that many salons and spas are embracing as a way to draw in new clients and further assist the ones they already have.

At a salon in Illinois, for example, co-owner Donna Keller is having the spa’s micropigmentation Technician Anita McGinnis touch up her eyeliner, which is included in the purchase price of this procedure It may look scary – a needle so close to your eye – but Keller says it’s not painful.

“I’m a baby, and it didn’t hurt the first time,” said Keller. “I think it depends on the person. One lady came in and said it felt like a bee sting, another lady said it tickled.” Skin is numbed first, then the procedure is carried out.

Once the touch-up is complete, the person can have two to three years of makeup-free eyeliner.

“You don’t have to put on makeup again,” said McGinnis. “If you think about how much eyeliner and lipstick costs, in the long run it saves money.” Plus, it may even offer additional perks.

“My mother came in and had this done and everyone tells her she looked 10 years younger,” said McGinnis.
